What is Peristeen® Light?

It’s a transanal irrigation system that offers a natural alternative to conservative bowel treatment. Designed to be both convenient and easy to use, it helps patients with faecal incontinence or chronic constipation empty their bowel* on their own terms using only water.

Defining bowel disorders

Use the Rome IV criteria to guide diagnosis of bowel disorders. According to the criteria, your patient must have two or more of the following in more than 25% of bowel movements to be diagnosed with chronic constipation and faecal incontinence³:

Straining
Hard or lumpy stools (Bristol Stool Form Types 1–2)
Sensation of incomplete evacuation
Sensation of anorectal blockage
Need for manual maneuvers to facilitate defecation
Fewer than three spontaneous bowel movements per week

To meet the criteria for faecal incontinence, the patient must have experienced involuntary bowel leakage for at least three months.⁴

Transanal irrigation as bowel treatment

Bowel disorder affects millions of people in many different ways.⁵ Some experience faecal incontinence, while others battle chronic constipation. The bowel treatment pyramid offers a structured approach to managing these conditions and some of the very first steps towards improvement can be changes in diet and lifestyle supplemented by medications (including oral and/or rectal laxatives, etc.).⁶
If nothing proves effective, transanal irrigation (TAI) should be introduced. TAI is designed to assist the evacuation of faeces from the rectum and/or distal colon by introducing water through the anus.⁷

Choosing the right transanal irrigation approach starts with understanding your patient’s symptoms and needs. Peristeen® Light offers low-volume options for suitable patients and can be prescribed without referral, supporting a simple and accessible approach to bowel management.
Before initiating TAI, rule out all red flag indications i.e. blood in faeces, weight loss, abdominal pain and any change in bowel habits.⁸ Check any contraindications and cautions for TAI Instructions for use.

The smoothest way to start TAI

How do you select the right solution for patients starting transanal irrigation? It needs to be simple to use and as gentle as possible. Comfort can also play a role when patients are introduced to TAI. A solution that feels soft and intuitive can help ease some of the perceived barriers at the start and make the process seem less daunting.
Select a catheter with a hydrophilic coating that doesn’t dry out. A catheter that remains coated helps patients have a smoother experience giving them the chance to proceed with irrigation at their own pace.

Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS)

The Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) is a HSE support scheme that helps reduce the cost of prescribed medicines in Ireland. If you do not have a medical card, you can apply regardless of income. Once registered, you and your household will pay no more than €80 per month in total for approved prescribed medicines and certain appliances — not per person, but for the whole family combined — with any additional costs covered by the HSE.
This can provide reassurance and financial protection if you or your family need ongoing treatment. Simply present your DPS card at your pharmacy when collecting your prescriptions.
