Coloplast History

A woman in grey short hair wearing glasses dressed in an nurse uniform from the 1950.

Elise Sorensen

Our Beginning

The Coloplast story begins back in 1954. Elise Sørensen is a nurse. Her sister Thora has just had an ostomy operation and is afraid to go out in public, fearing that her stoma might leak. Listening to her sister’s problems, Elise conceives the idea of the world’s first adhesive ostomy bag.

Based on Elise’s idea, Aage Louis-Hansen, a civil engineer and plastics manufacturer, and his wife Johanne Louis-Hansen, a trained nurse, created the ostomy bag. An ostomy bag that helps Thora – and thousands of people like her – to live the life they want to lead.

A simple solution that makes a difference.

Today, our business includes Ostomy Care, Continence Care, Wound & Skin Care and Urology Care. We operate globally and employ more than 10,000 employees.

Get to Know

Johan joined Coloplast, Denmark in 2016 bringing experience in both the MedTech and pharmaceutical sector. Johan has gained valuable commercial experience through a broad range of local, regional, and international assignments including sales representative, product management, sales management, European and Global Marketing, and General Management. Johan more recently was promoted to SVP UK & Ireland where he continues to play a vital part of the Coloplast growth. Johan relocated to Cambridge in April 2022, bringing his wife Nicole and Nola the dog with him. His three grown up children Magnus, Sophia and Oscar have flown the nest and will stay in Denmark with many planned trips to the UK.
Johan says…..
How would you describe yourself as a leader?
As a leader, I trust my colleagues, because where there is trust, that’s where the magic happens! From my experience in working with talented people across the world, I believe in being open-minded and listening to people. In Coloplast there is an incredible passion and focus on the customer; I see my role as SVP to bring out the best in everyone and to make teams work together, so we can stay market leaders and create more value for all customers.
What do you like to do when not working?
It's important for me to recharge myself and also to have fun – preferably at the same time. I enjoy cooking with my family and friends and to stay active with sports and participate in various outdoor activities. Running or going to the gym gives me a break with many “zen” moments, and clarity has often emerged during exercising. In addition, staying active helps balance the downsides of enjoying great food. I am also quite curious, and for example last year I joined the popular winter swimming trend, just to see what it’s like (FYI its cold...)!
